An Update from Our Missionaries in Peru

Greetings From the Jungle!

We pray this letter finds you prospering in this new year! Hard to believe that January is already gone and we’re in February!
Seems like the phrase “so much to do and so little time” describes our life pretty well. We’ve been busy, and we give God all the glory and praise for what has been accomplished.

We had the opportunity to join with brothers in a couple of churches, and do an outreach in the Jungle. We did a reenactment of the life of Jesus, and some of the miracles he did, in the plaza in Santa Tomas. Despite the fact that it rained during the entire program, we had an overwhelming turnout, and an estimated 100 people came to the Lord! We were honored to stand in the rain and watch God work as He blessed the efforts of the entire team. This project really demonstrated how much the body of Christ can do together! You were a part of this work, your donations were used to fund much of this program! We purchased several baskets of food and had drawings at the end of the program. Each person had a ticket with a number on it, (the tickets were free of course), and you had to be present to win a basket of food. I think everyone in the village came, a free basket of food is a pretty good enticement!

Classes have been going great, especially with the addition of Hermanos Oscar and Marissa to our mission. They are awesome teachers of the Word, and a real blessing to us personally! Another group in our Bible School has completed the first phase, and are ready to start phase 2 of the Bible Institute. If you’ll remember, our Bible school is in 3 parts, each taking about a year to complete.

The river here is rising again, it’s that time of year, so we ask once again for your prayers for our brothers who will be moving when the river comes into their homes. For us this way of life seems so foreign, why would you live in a place where you knew the river would force you out of your home each year? For them it is a normal way of life. When the river rises there is always a rise in diseases that come with it. There has been an outbreak of Malaria in the area right behind our house. So we’re praying for God’s protection, that none of these diseases come on our brothers.

We’ve had several water baptisms lately, and another is planned for this Thursday in Santa Tomas. It’s been raining here a lot, far more than is normal for January, and we haven’t been able to get to Santa Tomas for 3 weeks. The dirt road is just not passable. We’re praying for a clear day this coming Thursday, so we will be able to get through. (please include in your prayers, that we not only get there, but that it doesn’t rain while we’re there and we can’t get back :)

We so thank each of you who partner with us in the work here. We can do so much together for His Glory! If you haven’t had a chance to support this work through your finance and prayers, we would like to invite you to do so. We welcome your help! You may send your tax deductible donations to:

Christmas Greetings from Guatemala

Christmas is almost here!  We’re thankful for our Lord’s birth in that manger and for all He has done for us.  He loved us enough to be born into this painful world and enough to die for the forgiveness of our sins.  He wants us to receive His love today just as much He did then.  May you enjoy His presence in your heart this Christmas.

Prayer Request from Guatemala

I am writing you to share a special prayer request with you.  But first an update on the previous prayer requests:

The ministry to teens in San Marcos came to an end without becoming a church plant.  One of the Catholic teachers in the school rallied the teens and parents (including several that we had ministered to) in order to tell them that recent events didn’t warrant a change of religion (he was advising them to stay in the Catholic church).  Those that continued to faithfully attend the Bible studies were members of other Protestant churches.  In the end many lives were touched and people realized that the Lord is the only One that can help them with such needs.

Cesar did enter the Teen Challenge rehabilitation center in Guatemala City.  I have not been able to talk directly with him since leaving him there, but his parents have let me know that he has had a rough time adjusting and has wanted to leave at times.  Please pray that he allow the Lord to do a tremendous work in his heart.

I appreciate your prayers for the confidential problem in the leadership of one of the local churches that I asked for you to pray about.  I have talked to some people and things do look a bit better at this point.

The special request that I mentioned at the beginning of this e-mail is for a church here that is planning to open a alcohol and drug rehabilitation center here in Jacaltenango.  This may happen as early as mid-December.  I cannot tell you how great of a need this is for Jacaltenango.  Please pray for Dios de Pactos (God of Covenants) church and for all that is needed for this new ministry to be successful.  It will be a tremendous step of faith for this church.

Thanks,
Tony

Thanksgiving Update from Peru

Greetings from the Amazon Jungle, and Happy Thanksgiving!

We pray this letter finds you prospering in the Lord.  This Thanksgiving we’re reminded of just how blessed we are.  We are so thankful for each one of you who make the work here possible.  God has truly supplied all our needs, and we know He will continue to do so.  We pray this Thanksgiving you can stand with us and say “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want”.

A piece of exciting news……We have an opportunity to plant a new church in Punchana.  We have found a piece of land, with a building on it, which for the time being we can use for services.   We need to raise $1,500 dollars to purchase this property.  We have a brother in one of the churches here who has been serving as Associate Pastor, and he’s ready to place in his own church.  We believe this is an opportunity the Lord has provided.  This property is in the middle of a residential area, and there is no other church close by.  It is in an extremely poor area, where most people don’t have the money for transportation to be able to attend a church that is not within walking distance.  We are asking that you prayerfully consider being a part of seeing this new church established.

Thank you for your prayers for the government and the new President of Peru.  We have a more specific request in this area.  We have a mission here, that has been well established since 2002, Iglesia Sobre La Roca, and we have been working on securing permission from the Peruvian government to have residents live under our mission.  When we first started this process, the only thing needed was filing the proper paperwork, and paying the normal fees.  Two weeks before our paperwork was finalized, they put into affect a new law that said you had to be a mission in good standing for 7 years before residents could live under your mission.  So we waited the 7 years.  We have had similar circumstances for the past 2 years, with the final blow coming this past week.  They have now decided that we need to have over 10,000 active members in our churches before we qualify.  This new law not only affects us, but every church and mission in Peru as well.  There are no churches that large in all of Peru.  This law would effectively take away every legal right any mission or church has in Peru.  (Another mission here in Peru has been kind enough to allow us to live here under their mission, this new law affects them as well.)  A government official told us last week that they recognize this new law is unjust, and they are working to change it.  He said they should have a ruling on it by the first of January.  If this law were to stand, every missionary in this country could be forced to work here on visitor’s visas, which would only allow you to be in the country for 6 months out of the year.  We need your agreement in prayer, that this law will be overturned.  We’re asking God for Iglesia Sobre La Roca to be given full rights for residents to live under our mission.

As you can see, the two items topping our prayer list are an opportunity to plant a new church, and the enemy’s attempt to slow down this work.  We are not the least bit discouraged by this, in fact quite the opposite.  It’s when we are about the Father’s business that the enemy tries the hardest to stop us.  If the enemy weren’t chasing us, we would have to stop and wonder if we were on the right track!  Our God is able, and will watch over His Word to perform it, the gospel will be preached in all the world!

Thank you so much for standing with us in the work here.  We truly appreciate each of you who have stood with us during the past 15 years.  You’ve made the work possible.  If you’ve not had an opportunity to support this ministry with your finances in the past, we would like to invite you to be a part, we would certainly welcome your support. Together we can do more for Him! You may send your tax deductible donations to:

Guatemala update and prayer request

As always, we are appreciate your prayers for the Jacalteco people and the ministry among them.

The ministry to teens in San Marcos is at a crucial point.  They finished a discipleship Bible series recently.  It has had the potential of becoming a church plant.  The church from the main town that has been going out there has begun talking with the participants about the possibility of planting a church there.   Please pray for the Lord’s guidance in this.

Please also say a prayer for a man that I have been working with here named Cesar.  He has had a lot of trouble stemming from alcoholism, but is doing better and is considering entering a rehabilitation center.  We want to see him totally rehabilitated and able to bless his wife and children again.

I am also dealing with a confidential problem in the leadership of one of the local churches and I ask for your prayers for wisdom as I work with this leadership to assess the best way to deal with the problem.

Thanks,
Tony

Prayer for Guatemalan Teens

Once again I am thankful to be able to write you asking for your prayers.
We (a local church here in Jacal and myself) continue to minister to teenagers especially in the village of San Marcos.  The battle has been difficult with some of those who have suffered from demonic activity and whose families are very Catholic and/or involved in witchcraft.  Although they express a desire to follow the Lord in their time of suffering, when the teen is doing better they begin to draw back.  So I ask that you pray that these families will open their spiritual eyes to see more fully the depth of their need for the Lord.
This has resulted in discipleship Bible studies for the teens every Monday and Wednesday afternoon. It is pure excitement to see these young folk digging into the Word of God.  So far 31 people have received or bought a Bible.  The attendance has had its ups and downs ranging from 2 to 24.  Please pray that the teens and their families will continue to come and open their hearts to the Lord.
Thanks,
Tony Taylor

Witchcraft in Guatemala

Praying Friends,

I hope that you will all be able to take some time to pray for a tremendous need that we are seeing in the Jacaltenango area.

Some of the teenagers in the area have been playing satanic games and engaging in other satanic activity.  When you couple that with the fact that many of them have family members that are involved in witchcraft you can see that they are in a very volatile situation.  Many of these teens have become violent and/or suicidal.

I have been going to the village of San Marcos with one of the local churches here in the main town.  The teachers in the junior requested assistance because students experiencing demonic attacks have disrupted classes.  We have now ministered to over twenty teens.  They are being freed from demonic oppression, and have been accepting Jesus as their Savior.  Some of their family members have also come to know the Lord through this.  The church that I have been ministering with has begun a Bible study in San Marcos for them.  We still do not know why, but Monday there were only two present.  However, on Wednesday over 20 were in attendance.

One result is that the teens in the junior high have been hungry to get their hands on a Bible!  Having Bibles from the Bible Society, we have given away seven Bibles and sold 17 for less than $2 a piece.  Tomorrow I’ll send another ten with one of the teachers.

We have also seen some teens here in the main town have the same problem.  Some have received prayer and others, for religious reasons, have not wanted us to minister to them.

In another village, San Andres, one young person committed suicide as a result of demonic problems.  The teachers there are now having the same problem in that sometimes they cannot conduct their classes due to demonic manifestations.  It is hard to take care of all those that are in need; please pray that this great need in San Andres will be taken care of soon.

Please pray for these teenagers and for all of us that are ministering to them.

Thank you very much,
Tony Taylor
